Training

Structure Your Training

Are you engaged, dedicated to progressing and taking advantage of all CYTA has to offer, or are you still just dipping your toe into the Taekwondo pool?

To get the most out of training at Chung Yong Taekwondo Academy we recommend that you make use of the full range of instructors and classes on offer. We also suggest that, once you have settled in, you join us at events and support us at competitions.

Our classes are set up to focus on the different aspects of your training and to make use of the facilities and equipment we have available to us.

Standard & Syllabus Classes

These classes should be used as the foundation of your training and should be built into your regular weekly routine. They will provide you with the traditional training setup and work through the training syllabus required for you to progress through the grades. You can check our website for any changes in the future, but currently we recommend Tuesday (6:15pm) and Thursday (6:15pm) at Godstone for our kids and teens. For our teens and adults, we recommend Tuesday (8pm) Coulsdon and Thursday (8pm) Wallington.

Our Saturday (10:45am) Coulsdon class is an especially useful class to attend for syllabus work as it follows black belt class, and we use this class to work in smaller groups and provide more individualised feedback. We also have more equipment and pads at this class so can focus on different aspects of the syllabus whilst pushing your ability further. I would say, this is a class that is underutilised by many students at present, when considering the benefits of attending it offers.

Sparring and Skill Development Classes

We currently run two classes in the week that focus on skills, drills, and sparring. Although these are important for those who wish to progress in competitions, these classes are beneficial for all. The Tuesday (8pm) Godstone class for teens and adults focuses on skills, drill, reactions and timing. The majority of activities are pad work based and we do not spar in this class so as to allow everyone to focus on building their abilities and confidence.

Our Friday (7:30pm) squad class at Coulsdon also includes skills and drills, but also includes more sparring to practice the application of techniques. This is a hard working class suitable for anyone who has the basics in place and is keen to push their fitness. You also get to see our higher grade students working and sparring, which is always inspiring and helps you to see what you are working towards.

Black Belt Class

Our Saturday (9am) morning Coulsdon class is reserved for or Black Belts and is where our high grades are pushed to keep progressing, as well as given the opportunity to test their skills against each other. From the early start to the high grade syllabus work, which includes expanded sparring situations, this class is for the dedicated and hard working CYTA high grades.

In this class we also discuss the the progress of the lower grade students and any teaching points that need to be addressed or filtered down to the members.

This is a class that you should all aspire to gain access to and we look forwards to welcoming more of you to as you progress into the higher grades.

Our black belts, usually shattered by this point, then stay on for the following class to work closely with the colour belts, focusing on training elements they are struggling with.

Events & Competitions

It is important to step outside your training hall and have a look at the wider Taekwondo world. As a club we attend regular seminars and competitions, which we highly recommend that you join us at. You can see how we compare to other clubs, take the advice of senior grades from around the world, or just cheer us on and help celebrate our achievements. These are the events where strong friendships and bonds are made!
